Strong cold wind rose in the North India after snowfall in the upper reaches of the country. The biting cold coupled with dense fog shrouding over Amritsar crippled normal life. School children found going to school tough. "The weather is as cold as in Kashmir. We are facing difficulties in commuting to the schools. Because of the fog, we can hardly see anything outside," said Abhay Sharma, a student. The minimum temperature fell to zero degrees Celsius in Amritsar on Tuesday. "It is very difficult to wake up early in the morning to come to my shop,It seems that the weather in Amritsar is similar to that of Kashmir right now," said Krishan Gopal, a shopkeeper. Thick fog shrouded over the entire city, sending people in huddles around bonfires lit at street corners to keep warm. Residents in Shimla are waiting for the fresh snow. "The weather here is turning worse for last two days. The higher reaches of the mountains in tourist destinations like Narkanda, Kufri and Manali areas have received fresh snowfall, unlike this part of Shimla. When Shimla receives snowfall. More tourists come in and the farmers get a good apple crop," said Lekhraj, a resident. The Meteorological Department predicted that the chilling conditions were likely to persist. Thick shroud of fog has disrupted the air and rail traffic across the country. (ANI)

A new study has revealed that water-cooler gossip can prove very helpful in testing business ideas. The researchers behind the study are of the opinion that the informal channels that such chat provides could prove the perfect environment to sound out ideas. They even reveal how once a Sydney-based recruitment agency''s managing director, who could not afford to award all staff a pay rise but was worried that only doing so for some could adversely affect morale, opted to start a rumour by telling a trusted lieutenant that he was planning to award some people pay rises in return for their taking on more responsibility. They say that the rumour spread rapidly, and the employees proved so supportive that the notion was adopted as policy. Grant Michelson, the research director at Audencia Nantes Business School in France who has written a book about gossip in the workplace, suggested that employers better used water-cooler gossip to their advantage, rather than fruitlessly seeking to stamp it out. He, however, insisted that it was important to choose the right person to spread any message. "They have to be a subordinate who you have built up some trust (with), either through social or professional activities. But they can''t be so far below you in the pecking order that such easy exchanges would be unlikely," the Telegraph quoted him as saying. "It doesn''t mean you should take action on every bit of information you hear but if it''s from a reliable source, it is probably worth listening to," he added. However, Mike Emmott, adviser on employee relations at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, warned that rumours about job losses and change could be damaging in such uncertain times. He recommended that employers should seek to ensure that such rumours were managed well. "Managers must be honest and credible. You''ve got to be honest even if you don''t know what''s going on. You''ve got to be available," he said. (ANI)

Filed under: Handsets, Sony Ericsson, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS When you're reviewing a phone dominated by an unusually weighty image sensor that dominates the spec sheet, you can bet that cam is going to get an extra-thorough rundown. MobileBurn put Sony Ericsson's beastly C905 slider through its paces, and as you might expect, it produced some pretty awesome pictures -- as cellphones go, at least -- with a full-featured camera interface that seems to throw some validity behind the handset's Cyber-shot branding. There was some weirdness with vivid colors that seemed to be a fault of the review unit, and the geotagging functionality didn't really work, but if you just want to produce decent images that you can blow up and plaster to a dorm wall, this sucker should do the trick. A xenon flash, HSDPA, and serviceable signal and sound quality all conspire to make it a workable choice dubbed "Highly Recomended" by the site. Alright, yeah, count us in.Sony Ericsson C905 gets reviewed -- all 8.1 megapixels of it originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 06 Jan 2009 04:25:00 EST. Scientists at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine say that digitalis-based drugs like digoxin, which have been used to treat patients with irregular heart rhythms and heart failure for centuries, may prove helpful in treating cancer too. The researchers came to this conclusion while researching into existing drugs that might slow or stop cancer progression. "This is really exciting, to find that a drug already deemed safe by the FDA also can inhibit a protein crucial for cancer cell survival," says Dr. Gregg L. Semenza, director of the vascular program at the Johns Hopkins Institute for Cell Engineering and a member of the McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine. Semenza and his team have long studied the hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF-1) protein, which controls genes that help cells survive under low-oxygen conditions. HIF-1 turns on genes that grow new blood vessels to help oxygen-starved cells survive. Regions of low oxygen are common within the environment of fast-growing solid tumors. "Oxygen-deprived cancer cells increase their HIF-1 levels to survive in these unfavourable conditions. So turning down or blocking HIF-1 may be key to slowing or stopping these cells from growing," says Semenza. For their study, the researchers relied upon the Johns Hopkins Drug Library, a collection of over 3,000 drugs that are either FDA approved or currently being tested in phase II clinical trials, assembled by Hopkins pharmacology professor Jun O. Liu. They tested every drug in the library, and identified top 20 candidates that were able to to reduce HIF-1 in cancer cells by more than 88 percent. The researchers said that more than half of the 20 drugs belonged to a class of drugs already commonly used for treating heart failure, and included digoxin. During the study, the researchers treated prostate cancer cells grown at normal and low-oxygen levels with digoxin for three days, and counted the number of cells each day. They found that cells treated with digoxin significantly slowed their growth, with fewer total cells after three days and increased numbers of cells that had stopped growing when compared to untreated cells. "Many drugs may appear promising when used to treat cancer cells in a dish in the lab, but may have little or no effect on tumors in living animals," says Dr. Huafeng Zhang, a research associate in the Department of Oncology and the Institute for Cell Engineering at Hopkins. The researchers also administered daily injections of digoxin to mice with tumours for determining whether the drug had the same effect on cancer cells in the physiological context of a whole animal. They observed that tumours were large enough to be felt within nine days in untreated mice, tumours could first be felt only after as long as 15 to 28 days in treated mice. Upon examining tumours from the mice that had been treated, the researchers observed that their HIF-1 levels were lower than tumours from untreated mice. They then went on to show that it is digoxin specifically reducing HIF-1 that leads to the anti-tumour results they saw. Zhang, however, cautions that a great deal of work remains to be done to understand in detail how drugs like digoxin inhibit HIF-1 and slow or stop tumour growth. Given that this class of drugs acts by both strengthening and slowing down the rhythm of the heart, she says that patients can safely tolerate them in only a limited dosage range—a range that is lower than the concentrations of digoxin used in this study. "We''re trying to kill a tumour. We don''t want to stop a heart," she says. The study has been reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. (ANI)

Most Spaniards continue to resist the invasion of Father Christmas or Santa Claus, preferring to have their Christmas gifts brought by the Reyes Magos, the Three Wise Men: Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. Their processions are held on the eve (January 5th) of Epiphany (January 6th) in towns and cities throughout the country (oddly, they are a rare opportunity for political rivals to cooperate - the Magi are generally "played" by local politicians, one from each of the leading parties). The parades are led by floats representing more earthly concerns like telephony operators or department stores, then come the Reyes Magos (complete with camels), flinging sweets to the crowds of small children which line the route. The gifts the Magi bring later that night will be opened the next day, the last (twelfth) day of Christmas, this being Father Christmas's only real strong point in Spain - the children have little time to enjoy their presents before school resumes the following day, so in many households these are divided into two lots, one brought by Santa Claus, the other by the Three Wise Men.
