The name of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin bubbled up in the past week or so as a likely choice to be Republican presidential candidate John McCain's running mate, and supposedly knowledgeable political types were immediately dismissive. How could McCain attack Democratic nominee Barack Obama for lack of experience and then choose someone with less than two years on the job running one of the nation's least populous states? (Before that, Pahlin was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, for six years.) How can someone with such a slim resume possibly be the proverbial "heartbeat away" from the world's most powerful job?
