All Friday morning and afternoon, the sun was blocked by a slate-colored sky that cast a moody pall over metro Detroit. And then, about the time hundreds and then thousands of people streamed into the streets of Pontiac for Chrysler Arts, Beats & Eats, the sun punched a hole of pale blue into that sky. And then several holes, until no gray remained.

The Michigan State Fair runs through Labor Day at the corner of 8 Mile and Woodward. It's open 10-10 daily. Admission is $10; $5 for children 3-12, $5 for seniors 62 and older, free for kids 2 & younger. Parking is $7 per vehicle. Ride all day wristbands are $15 on weekdays (except Labor Day) and $25 on weekends (including Labor Day).
