The name of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin bubbled up in the past week or so as a likely choice to be Republican presidential candidate John McCain's running mate, and supposedly knowledgeable political types were immediately dismissive. How could McCain attack Democratic nominee Barack Obama for lack of experience and then choose someone with less than two years on the job running one of the nation's least populous states? (Before that, Pahlin was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, for six years.) How can someone with such a slim resume possibly be the proverbial "heartbeat away" from the world's most powerful job?

In his acceptance speech Thursday night at the Democratic National Convention, Sen. Obama sounded very much the part of a presidential candidate preparing for the fight of his life. He made the political case, reiterating the details behind his call for change, and ending any doubt that he can fire just as hard as Republican nominee John McCain.

A few really quick random thoughts on Obama's 43-minute acceptance speech last night: --Is it just me, or did the stage that Senator Barrack Obama spoke on last night look an awful lot like an oversized Oval Office? --Referencing eight years of a Bush presidency, Obama encouraged an "eight is enough" chant from the crowd. Speaking of which, have you noticed that McCain bears a slight resemblance to Dick Van Patten who starred in the old sitcom by that name; especially the two men's similar comb over? --The man who introduced Obama last evening and whom PBS described as Obama's mentor, was Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois. I knew Durbin back in the 90's when I worked in the capital of Illinois, Springfield, where Durbin resides. At one point in time during my stay there, a Republican occupied the governor's office and Republicans held most of the state constitutional offices. Republicans dominated the state legislature, the county board and the city council. The mayor was a Republican and Republicans held just about every elected office of any significance in the city. Despite all this, Durbin was repeatedly elected to Congress as a Democrat. If voters are looking for someone who can bridge the divide between red and blue America, they could do a lot worse than someone who was mentored by Durbin. --Obama claimed that McCain agrees with Bush 90-percent of the time. Obama's "I don't know about you, but I not ready to take a 10-percent chance on change" was his best line of the evening. --Obama's other great line was about Republican's love for "the ownership society. Obama observed that "
