Castrol has strengthened its position in football by signing a prestigious six-year deal as a FIFA World Cup Sponsor until 2014.   The agreement awards the global lubricants company worldwide rights for the 2010 FIFA World CupT in South Africa, the 2014 FIFA World CupT in Brazil and the two FIFA Confederations Cups which fall within the 2007-2014 period.   The news comes following the company's successful sponsorship of the recent European championships - the UEFA EURO2008 - which saw Castrol develop the Castrol Performance Index, a new tool which helps football fans to objectively analyse individual player and team performances.   "Our investment in football has proved a tremendous success and allowed Castrol to develop new opportunities in a way that has added value to our business partners; excited and rewarded our fans; and motivated our staff," said Senior Vice President for Lubricants, Mike Johnson.   Commenting on the announcement, FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter, said "With Castrol, we are delighted to welcome a committed football supporter into our global sponsorship family. The FIFA World Cup, with more than 26 billion TV viewers, attracts massive involvement from fans and non-fans alike, who are drawn to the drama and excitement that comes with top national-team football. With its new Performance Index, Castrol has enhanced the fans' experience with exclusive data on the players' speed, efficiency and performance in matches. The index was developed with renowned football experts such as Arsène Wenger, Ottmar Hitzfeld and Emilio Butragueño and it underlines Castrol's passion for the game,"   "This partnership not only highlights FIFA's confidence in South Africa and Brazil as the host nations, but also shows that the global business community believes in the incredibly positive impact the events will have," Blatter added.   Through the creation of the Castrol Performance Index, Castrol was able to showcase the importance of the brand's core values of passion, technical progress and performance in a way that was both innovative and engaging.   Also commenting on the deal, Castrol ambassador Arsene Wenger said "I chose to work with Castrol because its football sponsorship went beyond simply ticket promotions and branding. The development and launch of a new performance index was something which really interested me, and I was impressed by the way they used their experience in improving vehicle performance to champion the objective measurement of players and teams."   The FIFA World CupT sponsorship is the biggest in the company's 100-year history and will help Castrol continue to modernise its brand to deliver even more powerful and relevant offers for its consumers, which include a simplified product range and new technology benefits.   The connection with events such as the 2010 FIFA World CupT in South Africa and the 2014 FIFA World CupT in Brazil provide a route to a mass football audience that overlaps strongly with the brand's 45 million consumer base. Football fans can look forward to Castrol and FIFA making further announcements about concepts related to their new partnership later this year. (ANI)

Unperturbed by the economic slowdown in the United States, the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector is growing and cashing in on the opportunity of more business. For the BPO sector, the US slowdown is the melting in the pot to look for more business in terms of opportunity. This space in information technology even though US centric is looking formidable in facing the slowdown. The sector is also looking at other economies and non-US geographies to fill more space. Talking to ANI in an interview, Partha Sarkar, the CEO of HTMT Global Solutions, one of the most reputed BPO companies, said, “The US economic slowdown is an opportunity for BPO sector.” Sarkar finds this trend is temporary and will stabilize soon. Back office outsourcing has become a common practice among various BPO’s which are primarily focused on providing a full spectrum of services, including customer support, accounting, administration, inventory management, data entry services, research, CAD design support, insurance and risk analysis for medium sized enterprises is profitable business ventures which has swept India and the Indian middle class. Deepak Kumar, Sr Benefit Management Analyst, HTMT said, “Working in the BPO company is very valuable. It allows us to know the different cultures across the globe.” For Vandana Singh, Sr Claim Processing executive, at HTMT, working in BPOs is something different. State Information Technology Secretary, Ashok Kumar C Manoli, said: “It is an opportunity. The State Government will provide support to BPO companies in the state.” In the current scenario, outsourcing is a boon for everyone. Outsourcing is all about giving some part of your business work or the entire services to the other companies. Even though the US economic slowdown is a silent killer, the BPO segment is facing this under current in cashing in on opportunities. (ANI)

Time 01.07.2008 06:02 Source  b4uindia.com

The Jammu and Kashmir cabinet will meet here today to discuss on the order to hand over 39.88 hectares of land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB). According to sources, the meeting will be held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. The meeting will be held without People's Democratic Party (PDP) Ministers, who resigned to protest over the proposed land transfer to the shrine board. The cabinet will also decide on the allocation of portfolios vacated by PDP Ministers. Meanwhile, the situation in Srinagar continued to be tense but under control with the police and the para-military forces patrolling the streets following a call given by separatist leaders for a rally at the downtown Jama Masjid today. State Governor N N Vohra on Monday asked Ghulam Nabi Azad to prove his majority on the floor of the Assembly by July 7. Azad has said that he is ready to prove the majority of his government at anytime in the State Assembly. Earlier, he informed the Governor about the majority he enjoyed on the floor of the house, despite the 18-member PDP withdrawing its support to the Congress- led Government on Saturday over the transfer of forestland to the Amarnath Shrine Board. The Congress has 21 members in the 87-seat assembly and is backed by two CPM MLAs and eight Independents.  The term of the State Government expires on November 2. The National Panthers Party, which has four members, does not enjoy a good relationship with the government after Azad kept its MLAs out of his ministry. Only a split in either the National Conference or the PDP may save the State Government, as the BJP and the Jammu Mukti Morcha are unlikely to support the Congress during the floor test. (ANI)

Andhra CM blames intelligence failure for Maoists attack on Greyhounds

Time 01.07.2008 06:02 Source  b4uindia.com

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Rajashekhara Reddy has said that the deadly Maoist attack on a boat carrying anti-Naxalite unit ‘Greyhounds’ on Sunday night, in which around 61 security personnel were sunk, was a result of “intelligence failure”.   Reddy said that an inquiry would be made into the tragic lapse.   “This is not to mean any blame game. But, intelligence failure was there. We'll ascertain as to how the ultras managed to know the route and how the tragedy took place. A very senior high level officer will inquire and let us know the truth through the findings,” said Reddy after visiting the injured at a hospital in Visakhapatnam on Monday.   Police said that 29 Greyhounds personnel, some with gunshot wounds, had survived, but 37 others were still missing after the rebels fired from hilltops at their boat passing through a narrow gorge in Orissa’s Malkangiri district on Sunday.   Although the police said that the well-trained officers would be able to survive, a top official of the administration said “30-40 people” could have died in the attack.   The anti-naxalite unit ‘Greyhounds’ of the Andhra Pradesh government was looking for the rebels in their jungle stronghold while they were attacked at Balimela reservoir on the Orissa-Andhra Pradesh border, police said and added that many of the officers jumped into the water.   According to eyewitnesses, the Maoists used grenades and rockets to ambush the vessel, a claim that police denied.   Rescue workers said some policemen could have been trapped in the boat and drowned. Junk food diet during pregnancy may harm your babys health

Junk food diet during pregnancy may harm your babys health

Time 01.07.2008 06:01 Source  b4uindia.com

Eating a poor diet when pregnant may cause long-lasting, irreversible damage - from heart disease to diabetes - in offspring, finds a new study in mice.   During the study, Stephanie Bayol and Neil Stickland at the Royal Veterinary College, London, fed female rats a ‘junk food’ diet of crisps, cheese, muffins and other processed foods throughout pregnancy and lactation.   The offspring, who were overweight at birth, were born with a taste for junk-food themselves.   However, even when fed a healthy diet, the junk-food babies had a host of medical problems that lasted beyond adolescence into adulthood.   The study showed that the rats had increased cholesterol and triglyceride levels – both linked to heart disease.   Insulin and glucose in the blood were also unusually high, known to be a cause of type-2 diabetes.   And the rats remained significantly podgier than normal with extra fat around the kidneys, another diabetes risk factor.   Researchers found that the female offspring were particularly badly affected, expressing high levels of glucose and the appetite-promoting hormone leptin making them very prone to obesity.   "It seems that a mother's diet whilst pregnant and breastfeeding is very important for the long term health of her child," Dr Bayol.   "This does not mean that obesity and poor health is inevitable and it is important that we take care of ourselves and live a healthy lifestyle. But it does mean that mothers must eat responsibly whilst pregnant," Dr Bayol added.   Professor Stickland said: "Humans share a number of fundamental biological systems with rats, so there is good reason to assume the effects we see in rats may be repeated in humans.   "Our research certainly tallies with epidemiological studies linking children's weight to that of their parents," he added.    The new study is published in The Journal of Physiology. Fatty liver disease may increase heart disease risk in overweight, obese kids

Fatty liver disease may increase heart disease risk in overweight, obese kids

Time 01.07.2008 06:01 Source  b4uindia.com

Overweight or obese kids with fatty liver disease might be at an increased risk of developing heart disease in later life, suggests a new study.   The study conducted over 150 overweight children with biopsy-proven non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and 150 overweight children without NAFLD found that children had an elevated cardiovascular risk.   The overweight children with NAFLD showed higher levels of fasting glucose, insulin, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL, "bad" cholesterol), triglycerides and higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure than the control group.   They also had significantly lower levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL, "good" cholesterol) than the control group.   Children with metabolic syndrome were five times more likely to have NAFLD as overweight and obese children without metabolic syndrome.   "Our results demonstrate that obese children and adolescents with a definitive diagnosis of NAFLD have a more severe cardiovascular risk profile than their age, sex and BMI-matched peers," said Dr Jeffrey Schwimmer, lead author of the study and associate professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego.   "These collective data illustrate that fat accumulation in the liver may play a more important role than obesity itself in determining the risk for 'weight-related' metabolic co-morbidities.   “Thus, in children and adolescents, NAFLD may serve as a marker to stratify the cardiovascular risk of overweight and obese patients," he added.   Schwimmer said: "Roughly 25 percent of children with fatty liver will develop hepatitis as children or by their 20s. Of these, approximately 20 percent may go on to develop cirrhosis as young adults, with a subsequent life expectancy of seven years.   "Overweight children age 8 or older and especially those with symptoms of metabolic syndrome should be screened for NAFLD," he added.   The findings are reported in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association. Zinc fingers bring personalized HIV therapy a step closer to reality

Zinc fingers bring personalized HIV therapy a step closer to reality

Time 01.07.2008 06:01 Source  b4uindia.com

Researchers have taken a step forward to bringing personalized HIV therapy within reach by using tiny, naturally occurring proteins called zinc fingers to engineer T cells.   In the study conducted using a mouse model, researchers from University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine found that with the help of zinc fingers they could reduce the viral load of immune-deficient mice injected with engineered T cells.   "By inducing mutations in the CCR5 gene using zinc finger proteins, we've reduced the expression of CCR5 surface proteins on T cells, which is necessary for the AIDS virus to enter these immune system cells," Nature quoted first author Elena Perez, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Penn, as saying.   "This approach stops the AIDS virus from entering the T cells because it now has an introduced error into the CCR5 gene," she added.   Those individuals born with mutations on CCR5 gene are immune to HIV infection and apparently not influenced by the non-functional CCR5 protein.   Usually, zinc fingers are hooked to different bases in the DNA sequence to control gene activity.   During the study, zinc fingers were crafted to hook on to specific DNA sequences in the CCR5 gene.   This protein is one of the two cell-surface receptors that push HIV to enter into a T cell in order to replicate.   They found that zinc finger protein brings a DNA enzyme to the CCR5 gene to cut a portion of its sequence, but due to the repair process a new mutation arises in the CCR5 protein, making it non-functional.   Without a functional CCR5 protein on the cell's surface, HIV cannot enter, apparently developing resistance to HIV infection.   In the study, the investigators used healthy human CD4 T cells and added DNA that expresses the zinc fingers, which modifies the CCR5 co-receptor.   They grew the engineered cells in tissue culture flasks and transferred them into immune-deficient mice infected with HIV.   "We followed them over time and showed that those mice that received the zinc-finger-treated cells showed less viral load than controls and improved CD4 counts," said Perez.   The researchers are now planning to conduct human trials for using modified T cells from an HIV-infected person for their own treatment.   The study appears in advanced online issue of Nature Biotechnology. Plastic robot 'skin,' flexible laptops and electric posters on the anvil

Plastic robot 'skin,' flexible laptops and electric posters on the anvil

Time 01.07.2008 06:01 Source  b4uindia.com

Robot ‘skin’, flexible laptops and electric posters, all made from plastic may soon be a reality, thanks to the advance in research into "plastic electronics".   Plastic has long been thought of as an insulating material that could not conduct electricity, but ground-breaking research in the 1970s proved that some plastics could do so.   Now, some of the potential applications of these breakthrough materials – electronic billboards, flexible laptops, high-definition television screens only one centimetre thick – are coming to light.   All this has Marianna Khorzov and David Andelman, from the School of Physics and Astronomy at Tel Aviv University, and Rafi Shikler, from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Ben Gurion University, believing that plastic-based transistors and organic light-emitting displays will soon be rocking the electronics market.   Transistors, the fundamental building block in modern electronic devices, are traditionally made of silicon. Plastic-based transistors however are easier and cheaper to manufacture than their silicon equivalent. And because plastic is flexible, the world could also soon see ultrathin, flexible laptops.   Other exciting developments are likely to be in the field of bionics, including the development of materials sensitive but flexible enough to replicate skin, which could be used by robots in situations where a sense of touch is crucial.   "We expect that, for many applications, these materials will gradually replace silicon and metals, and they may even make possible entirely new technologies, particularly in the field of bionics, which seeks to link up technology with biological systems,” wrote the researchers.   The details of these advances are published in the recent edition of Physics World. Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) claim to have invented a simple and inexpensive method for reading DNA (or RNA) microarrays within minutes.   The researchers have revealed that their technique is based on measuring the electrostatic repulsion between silica microspheres and hybridised DNA.   The significance of their work lies in the fact that it takes scientists a step closer to realising the dream of expanding personalized medicines beyond the wealthiest of nations with state-of-the-art clinics.   The researchers say that their technique is so simple that it can be carried out in a matter of minutes.   "One of the most amazing things about our electrostatic detection method is that it requires nothing more than the naked eye to read out results that currently require chemical labeling and confocal laser scanners," Nature magazine quoted led researcher Jay Groves, a chemist with joint appointments at Berkeley Lab's Physical Biosciences Division and the Chemistry Department of the University of California (UC) at Berkeley, as saying.   "We believe this technique could revolutionize the use of DNA microarrays for both research and diagnostics," he added.   In their research paper, Groves and his colleagues describe how dispersing a fluid containing thousands of electrically-charged microscopic beads or spheres made of silica (glass) across the surface of a DNA microarray, and then observing the Brownian motion of the spheres provided measurements of the electrical charges of the DNA molecules.   The researchers say that such measurements can in turn be used to interrogate millions of DNA sequences at a time.   According to them, such measurements can be observed and recorded with a simple hand-held imaging device, and that even a cell phone camera would do.   "The assumption has been that no detection technique could be more sensitive than fluorescent labeling, but this is completely untrue, as our results have plainly demonstrated," said Groves.   "We've shown that changes in surface charge density as a result of specific DNA hybridization can be detected and quantified with 50-picomolar sensitivity, single base-pair mismatch selectivity, and in the presence of complex backgrounds. Furthermore, our electrostatic detection technique should render DNA and RNA microarrays sufficiently cost effective for broad world-health applications, as well as research," he added.   The use of DNA microarray assays has so far been limited because current techniques typically depend upon fluorescence detection, a demanding methodology that requires time-consuming chemical labelling, high-power excitation sources, and sophisticated instrumentation for scanning.   Individual laboratories or clinics, especially in developing countries, can’t afford such a methodology.   While label-free DNA detection strategies do exist, they require either complex device fabrication or sophisticated instrumentation for readouts, and in addition none are compatible with conventional DNA microarrays, where up to one million sequences are available for interrogation in a single experiment.   "We have demonstrated parallel sampling of a microarray surface with micron-scale resolutions over centimetre-scale lengths. This is four orders of magnitude larger than what has been achieved to date with conventional scanning-electrostatic-force microscopy," said Groves.   The researchers have revealed that they are planning to test the application of their technique in high-density arrays, and pushing its ultimate resolution limits.   "Since the resolution of electrostatic-based imaging is determined by the number of particle-observations rather than by the diffraction limit of light, our readouts could serve as a form of ultramicroscopy. The real grand challenge for this technology, however, will be for us to find suitable industrial partners with whom we can work to see that useful new products actually make it to market," Groves said.
