Kyiv—On 30 October, Cabinet Ministers of Ukraine issued a resolution (N 953) “On Approval of the Regulation of the Committee for Ensuring the Realization of Rights of Religious Organizations and its Composition.” According to the document, the Committee is a “standing consultative and advisory body attached to the Cabinet Ministers of Ukraine.” One of the main objectives of the committee is “preparation of proposals as to the restoration of rights of religious organizations, violated as a result of the totalitarian policy of the Soviet Union and development of a mechanism to overcome negative consequences of that policy.”

Kyiv- 19-23 October, an official delegation of the State Committee of Ukraine on Matters of Nationalities and Religions headed by Oleksandr Sagan made a working visit to the Chinese People’s Republic on the invitation of the state administration on matters of religions of the State Council of China. On 20 October, Oleksandr Sagan met with the deputy head of the state administration on matters of religions, Mr. Van. The parties exchanged information on the religious situation in Ukraine and China and discussed urgent problems of development of state-confessional relations in both countries.

Lviv—On 1 November, a memorial service was conducted at the Memorial for the Warriors of the Ukrainian Galician Army and the Ukrainian Sichovi Striltsi in Yaniv Cemetery in Lviv with the participation of Ukraine’s President, Victor Yushchenko. The event was held within the framework of the celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Western-Ukrainian People’s Republic. RISU was told by Taras Hrynchyshyn that the service was headed by Bishop Andrii (Horak), Metropolitan of Lviv and Sokal of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchate and Bishop Mykhail (Koltun) of Sokal and Zhovkva of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, who is in charge of chaplaincy ministry for the military. They were assisted in the service by the clergy of the two mentioned confessions and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church.

Odessa— 25 October-1 November, the first blessed council of the Russian True-Orthodox Church (RTOC) was held in the Cathedral of Prelate Ioan Kronshtadtskyi in the city of Odessa. The main subjects of the council were the beatification of new saints, Moscow Patriarchate’s relations with other jurisdictions of “true Orthodoxy,” their position on globalization and identification codes as well as relations with other parts of the historic Russian Orthodox Church Abroad (ROCA), of which RTOC considers itself a successor.
