New Public Council To Promote Harmonization of State-Confessional Relations

Kyiv—A Public Council on Matters of Cooperation with Churches and Religious Organizations was established by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine according to its Order 941 of 20 October, 2008. The document says that the council’s purpose is “further harmonization of state-confessional relations in the area of education, ensuring the right of citizens to the freedom of worship and fostering spirituality and morality of pupils, taking into account the proposals of Churches and religious organizations of Ukraine.” The council was established as the result of recommendations developed at the meetings with the heads of Christian Churches of Ukraine.

Kyiv—On 11 November, 2008, a regular session of the Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Moscow Patriarchate was held in the Kyiv Monastery of the Caves. In particular, the participants of the Synod defined the notion of “All-Ukrainian religious procession” and passed a resolution to conduct such processions only with the blessing of the Synod of UOC-MP.

Kyiv—Authorized representatives of seven main Churches and religious organizations signed or consented in principle to a Memorandum of cooperation in matters of pastoral care for the military of the Armed Forces of Ukraine at the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. RISU’s Ukrainian-language web page posted this story on 12 November, 2008. The memorandum was signed on the Church’s part by representatives of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchate, Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Roman Catholic Church, Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, All-Ukrainian Union of Associations of Evangelical Christians Baptists and Spiritual Board of Muslims of Ukraine.
