A large number of people converged from different parts of the country at the Ranganatha shrine in Srirangam, Tamil Nadu, to celebrate the Vaikuntha Ekadashi festival on Wednesday. Devotees thronged the temple premises to offer obeisance to Lord Vishnu, who is known as Lord Ranganatha in the local parlance here. Vaishnavism (the worship of Lord Vishnu) culture holds the belief that Vaikunth Dwaram, the gate to Lord''s innner sanctum open on this day. Legend has it that the Lord opened the gate of Vaikuntam (His abode) for two demons in spite of them being against the Him. At Sri Ranganathaswami temple, Lord Vishnu as Lord Ranganatha is adorned is an armour of diamonds (rathnaangi) and is brought to the thousand-Pillared Hall from the sanctum sanctorum through the northern gate known as Paramapada Vasal, the gate to the heaven. This gate is opened once in a year, only on the Vaikuntha Ekadashi day. Devotees of Lord Ranganatha throng the temple during Ekadashi festival as it marks the only occasion when the idol of the God bedecked in diamonds is taken out of the sanctum sanctorum to be placed at Thirumamani Mandapam (thousand pillared hall). "The Vaikuntha Ekadesi festival is celebrated for 20 days and the Tamil ..are sung by the Arayar in special dance format in all these 20 days. People from all over the world come to visit this temple on this day and for their benefit we have also given direct relay, live relay in our website plus other organization has also made efforts to see that this festival is a grand success," said Kavita, the Joint Commissioner of Ranganatha shrine. Arayar Natanam is a dance performed in the temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu in Tamil Nadu. Pilgrims sing devotional songs and chant religious hymns throughout the day in Lord''s praise. It is believed that those who get audience with the Lord on this religious occasion, they find place in the His abode. The hall of 1,000 pillars is the most splendid part of the Srirangam temple.Lord Ranganatha then presides over his divine court and is visited by a large number of devotees. (ANI)

08 JAN 2009The AAIB released the final report on their investigation of several incidents at Bristol International Airport. Resurfacing and re-profiling work was taking place on parts of the runway at BIA as part of a major project to resurface the manoeuvring area pavements, and sections of the runway surface were ungrooved base course asphalt. From 14 November 2006, there were reports from flight crew of a variety of problems related to the friction characteristics of the temporary runway surface, though no serious incidents occurred until 29 December 2006. On that day, the flight crew of G-XLAC (a Boeing 737-81Q) experienced poor stopping performance during landing. Later that day, the flight crew of G-BWDA (an ATR-72-202) experienced stopping and lateral control difficulties during landing, and the aircraft departed the runway surface and came to rest on the grass area at the side of the runway. Later still, the flight crew of G-EMBO (an EMB-145EU) experienced lateral control difficulties during landing, and the aircraft partially left and then regained the runway. On 3 January 2007, another flight crew, also operating G-XLAC, experienced poor stopping performance. The airport was subsequently closed whilst grooves were cut in the base course. After it re-opened there were no further incidents. The investigation identified the following causal factors: 1. Reduced friction on the wet ungrooved base course sections of the runway caused flight crews to experience reduced braking action and reduced lateral controllability on landing in strong crosswinds; 2. The Flight Operations Department Communication (FODCOM) advice published by the CAA regarding operations on runways notified slippery when wet, in wet conditions, was not communicated by operators to flight crews; 3. The passing, by ATC, of braking action reports based on Mu-meter friction assessments, gave flight crews a false confidence in the braking action available on the wet runway. The investigation identified the following contributory factor: 1. G-BWDA landed in a crosswind outside the operators published limits and the subsequent use of reverse thrust was contrary to the advice contained in the companys Operations Manual. The AAIB has made five Safety Recommendations. (AAIB)

Scientists have tricked bone marrow into releasing extra adult stem cells into the bloodstream, a technique that they hope could one day be used to repair heart damage or mend a broken bone, in a new study published today in the journal Cell Stem Cell. When a person has a disease or an injury, the bone marrow mobilises different types of stem cells to help repair and regenerate tissue.

Most Spaniards continue to resist the invasion of Father Christmas or Santa Claus, preferring to have their Christmas gifts brought by the Reyes Magos, the Three Wise Men: Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. Their processions are held on the eve (January 5th) of Epiphany (January 6th) in towns and cities throughout the country (oddly, they are a rare opportunity for political rivals to cooperate - the Magi are generally "played" by local politicians, one from each of the leading parties). The parades are led by floats representing more earthly concerns like telephony operators or department stores, then come the Reyes Magos (complete with camels), flinging sweets to the crowds of small children which line the route. The gifts the Magi bring later that night will be opened the next day, the last (twelfth) day of Christmas, this being Father Christmas's only real strong point in Spain - the children have little time to enjoy their presents before school resumes the following day, so in many households these are divided into two lots, one brought by Santa Claus, the other by the Three Wise Men.
