The Ukrainian public is generally unaware of an important date that was marked in April 2008: the 85th anniversary of the launch of the policy known as Ukrainization. Its genesis is connected to the resolution passed by the XII Congress of the Russian Communist Party (Bolsheviks) on April 17-23, 1923, on so-called indigenization

Reviving the national culture was the slogan of the special days that were dedicated to our newspaper and held last week in Dnipropetrovsk under the auspices of our friends at National Mining University. The university faculty and students who organized the event stressed that their goal was to rally the residents of Dnipropetrovsk around the idea of Ukrainocentrism. As part of the effort to further this goal, The Day s photo exhibit was opened, a meeting of the Ostroh Club of Young Intellectuals was held, along with a readers conference entitled The Day and the Formation of Historical Memory among Young People.

Early this spring the central square in Dnipropetrovsk, one of the cities in Ukraine that are preparing to host Euro 2012, began looking like the ruins of Stalingrad. The horrified city residents have been observing the efforts of the municipal authorities, who authorized the demolition of two monumental structures that are part of the central squares architectural ensemble: the Hotel Central and the Childrens World Department Store. The store, built before the Second World War, was designed by the celebrated architect Oleksandr Krasnoselsky and was one of a handful of examples of Ukrainian national architecture in Dnipropetrovsk

This may be the most controversial and provocative part of my article. I am adamant in my conviction that the introduction of a new list of Bachelors degrees under the slogan of conformity to European standards has inflicted the greatest damage on Ukrainian post-secondary education in the last few years. My view is shared by others. A well-known and influential rector whom I recently queried about his attitude to the necessity of introducing the new list of Bachelors degrees responded with a sharply negative assessment. In response to my next logical question, How did you, as rector, allow this? he answered briefly: Politics. However, let us get back to arguments and facts.

The Kyiv Law Society was founded in 1877 at the Kyiv Imperial University of St. Volodymyr (now Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University). During the period of struggle for Ukraines independence in the early part of the 20th century, its traditions were continued by the Ukrainian Law Society, which was founded in 1917 and supported by the Central Rada. It ceased to exist immediately after the liquidation of the Ukrainian National Republic.

On Thursday, May 29, 2008, Ukraine marked the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers on the state level for the fifth time. Key government officials paid their respects to Ukrainian peacekeepers, who are helping to maintain peace in various hotspots around the world. Last week all of Ukraines schools went through the last- bell ceremony. For the junior graders it meant the beginning of the summer vacations, but for the eleventh-graders the start of the most trying period of final tests for the state examinations. All school-leavers will take them, but the results will not affect the marks in their secondary-education certificates. The school-leavers also received the first certificates with their independent Ukrainian language, literature and mathematics test result.

The entry of any country into NATO is a kind of litmus test of its statehood, and one can convince the population of the necessity to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization only with the help of facts. This opinion was expressed last week by Estonian experts taking part in a roundtable entitled Estonia in NATO: Experience, Lessons, and the Future, which was organized with the assistance of the Democratic Initiatives Foundation

Israel recently celebrated its 60th birthday. Many world leaders, including US President George Bush, visited Israel to mark this anniversary, which received extensive coverage in the international media. Israel is ready to advance the peace process in the Middle East. As the news Web site Why-Net reported last week, Israel has offered Palestinian radical groups a two-stage plan to cease hostilities in the Gaza Strip. Many Israeli ministers are ready to consider the question of Israels withdrawal from the Golan Heights, but no earlier than in 25 years

The recent NATO summit in Bucharest must have been a cold shower for our national democrats, forcing them to switch from rhetoric about the need to conduct explanatory work about NATO to concrete action. On May 30, the Our Ukraine- Peoples Union Party (NU-NS) launched a project called Yes to NATO! in support of Ukraines membership.

Journalism can and must form values, no matter how dubious this idea may sound. Ukrainian society, which declared its goal to become democratic after leaving the post-totalitarian space, is in dire need of professional journalists, who will surgically excise the past and provide a treatment to cure the present. But to be able to perform such procedures, journalists need to undergo moral training. The heads of many journalists and, indeed, our entire national informational space are littered with vestiges of Soviet propaganda, on the one hand, and contemporary informational junk, pop culture, and bad taste, on the other.

The recent revaluation of the hryvnia will directly affect only a proportion of Ukrainian citizens: those who have savings. However, down the road the measures adopted by the National Bank of Ukraine are likely to cause repercussions (not necessarily negative one) that will affect enterprises and businesses. The Day queried its experts about possible developments.
