Ukrainian President Stresses Importance of Spirituality in Orphaned Youth

Kyiv On 30 May 2008, Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko addressed representatives of various churches and religious organizations with a request to help orphans find families and to support the children and their new parents at all times by wise pastoral advice. The president is convinced that the Church plays a tremendous and invariable role in caring for youth and shaping their spiritual lives.

Moscow Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) Head Patriarch Alexis II and the head of the Pontifical Committee For Promoting Christian Unity, Cardinal Walter Casper, met in Moscow on 29 May 2008 to discuss relations between the ROC and the Roman Catholic Church (RCC). According to the cardinal, it was a non-official visit to get acquainted with the spiritual and theological traditions of the Russian church.

Kyiv-Lviv On 1 June 2008, Pro-life students of the Ukrainian Catholic University and Lviv Holy Spirit Seminary organized Protect me, a prayer action calling for the protection of unborn life on occasion of International Childrens Day. With the support of the Institute of Family and Married Life of UCU, the action aims to draw youth communities, organizations, and movements, priests and teachers of UCU, and all interested persons. The program includes communal prayer for unborn children, community addresses, and even a talent show. Similar actions are to be held by Pro-life activists in Lutsk, Ternopil and Kolomyia.

Lviv On 31 May 2008, approximately 30 thousand Jehovahs Witnesses from all over Ukraine gathered at Ukraine Stadium in Lviv for a special prayer service in honor of Teodor Yarach, a member of the organizations leadership, and John Kickot a representative of the organizations International Center in New York, USA. They have been touring several countries for the past couple of weeks with their respective wives, Melita and Laura, to encourage their fellow-believers.

KyivOn 3 June 2008, the Supreme Council of Ukraine considered for the second time amendments to a law stipulating renting land to religious organizations outside of auctioning procedures, after the president vetoed the first draft. The Law On making amendments to certain legislative acts of Ukraine (Bill 2481, author: Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine) polled a majority of 226 votes and was signed by the president the same day in the parliaments session hall.
