On June 3, 2008, at Kyiv- Mohyla Academy, Smoloskyp Publishers launched Hryhorii Kostiuks two-volume collection of memoirs entitled Zustrichi ta proshchannia (Meetings and Farewells). Kostiuk, a noted Ukrainian literary critic, was destined to spend his youth in the 1920s and 1930s, one of the most tragic eras in our literary history. In 1925-29, Hryhorii Kostiuk studied in Kyiv and attended courses taught by Mykola Zerov and Borys Yakubovsky. He moved to Kharkiv sometime in the 1930s and joined the POLITFRONT literary association, where he rubbed shoulders with Mykola Khvylovy, Mykola Kulish, Pavlo Tychyna, Yurii Yanovsky, Ivan Bahriany, Ostap Vyshnia, and other famous writers

To Viktor Kondrashin and everyone else: I am becoming increasingly convinced of the political astuteness of the CPSU leaders. In February 1956 they took the risk of revealing to the world the crimes of the partys first general secretary. But they took their time three decades, until December 1987 admitting to the fact of the 1932-33 Holodomor, which by then was common knowledge, and all because the realization of the causes of the Holodomor would fundamentally destroy the imperialist historical memory that had been instilled for centuries in the minds of the population in the post- Soviet space. The Soviet past is part of this imperial memory.

Ilashchuk: When we were preparing for the telethon, we didnt expect to draw big viewer ratings. Instead, our job was to discuss problems that are preventing our children from enjoying the best moments of their childhood. If you watched the telethon, you would have heard that we talked about this issue non-stop with our guests, trying to find solutions to acute situations. We gave the mike to people whose personal and professional reputation is unquestionable. It is not ratings that determine the practical value of this telethon but the 4,000 calls that were made to our studios telephone operators. Our guests responded to some of the callers live on air

Summer vacations began a few days ago. During the holiday season the number-one problem for parents is how to organize their childrens leisure activities. The police are urging them to send their kids to school-sponsored holiday camps or to stay with relatives in the country so that they will have adult supervision. Idleness and too much freedom lead many children to engage in risky activities or even to commit crimes. The police say that in the past four years juvenile delinquency in Ukraine has dropped by 10 percent and the number of serious crimes (murders, thefts, robberies) by 16.5 percent.

According to Ukraines green- capped state border guards, our country is becoming increasingly popular. Since the beginning of 2008, 24 million people and 5.3 million vehicles have crossed our borders. Unfortunately, illegal migrants are among the first people to take advantage of our countrys unique transit status. During one four-month period this year Ukrainian border guards detained many uninvited guests: 1,009 illegal migrants for illegal crossing our state borders and 641 for violating the regulations governing stays in the country.

MOSCOW In Russia, if you have dark hair and a slightly swarthy complexion, you are likely to be in danger. Sadly, Russias leaders have tolerated, if not encouraged, fear of foreigners and assaults on those whose appearance differs from the average Russian.

In recent days the Ukrainian and Russian mass media have given wide coverage to the Russian proposal that was approved by the Political Affairs Committee of PACE, the statutory organ of the Council of Europe. Citing PACE vice-president Goran Lindblad, the mass media reported that thanks to the activity of Russias representatives, this organization will now study the consequences of the Holodomor of the 1930s on the entire territory of the former USSR, not just in Ukraine. Russian mass media reports focused generally on Russias victory in this question.

"Two aspects can be singled out here. First, both Cracow and Wroclaw are very beautiful cities. Second, there is a psychological difference between Cracow and Wroclaw. If we talk about society, the one in Cracow is older and has deeper traditions. Wroclaws community is younger. The explanation for this is that the city was destroyed and therefore its identity is quite new and fresh. From the point of view of mentality, there are also differences between these two cities. We are all Poles and we speak Polish. But Cracow is a much more famous city, while Wroclaw is kind of a crazy city."
