Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, is a dynamic city. New residential districts with marble buildings are springing up, along with puppet theaters, circuses, museums, and skating rinks. The Internet newspaper www.24.ua decided to find out how much strontium and cesium there is in locally purchased fish, sausages, milk, and cheese. This was not a difficult task: the citys Environmental Health Office (SES) does free testing of foods and charges 205 hryvnias to test building materials.

A new teaching aid called Basic Consumer Knowledge , part of a new subject for grades 1 to 12, will be introduced next year by the Ministry of Ukraine for Education and Science in collaboration with the European Union and the United Nations Development Programme. This course is supposed to make our children aware of their consumer rights, give them indispensable information on the economy, food production technologies, jurisprudence, and banking, and teach them how to apply this knowledge to everyday life.

Leigh Turner, Britains newly-appointed ambassador to Ukraine, was surprisingly quick to assume his duties. As The Day was told in the British Embassy, Mr. Turner arrived in Kyiv the Friday before last and by Wednesday he had presented his credentials to President Viktor Yushchenko. Her Majestys Ambassador to Ukraine told the president that the British government is committed to the closest possible relationship with Ukraine as our country moves towards eventual membership in the EU and NATO. The Day s editorial offices recently received a letter from Markian Kulyk, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Romania, announcing that the Romanian edition of Prof. Stanislav Kulchytskys book will be launched during a ceremony commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor. This event, which will be organized by the Ukrainian Embassy, will take place in the Romanian parliament on July 1.

KYIV-OSTROH-KYIV - Six years ago, Academician Mykola Zhulynsky, chairman of the supervisory board of Ostroh Academy National University, invited Larysa Ivshyna, editor of The Day , to come to Ostroh.
