Summer is in full swing, so it’s time to talk about Paris. You won’t find a better conversationalist for this topic than Oleh Skrypka, the lead singer of the Ukrainian rock group Vopli Vidopliasova (VV), who lived in this legendary capital for nearly seven years.

Here is a vivid example of one of these stereotypes: it has been claimed that Drahomanov was indifferent, or even hostile, to the ideals of Ukraine’s national liberation throughout his life, and the 20-th-century radical Ukrainian thinker Dmytro Dontsov was one of the most ardent defenders of this thesis. According to Dontsov, Drahomanov was ostensibly a liberal, a federalist, and a cosmopolitan by conviction. This alone meant that he could not have been a consistent advocate of an independent Ukrainian state.

In contemporary Ukraine, Dmytro Dontsov (1883-1973) remains at best a partially acceptable but mostly controversial figure. It is difficult to imagine a non- Galician city that would name a street after this great patriot or a university that would readily agree to hold a conference devoted to this creative personality and his ideas. Yet Dontsov played an outstanding and fateful role in the formation of Ukrainian national ideology, and he occupies a prominent place in Ukrainian culture.

In 1888 tsarist Russia celebrated — for the first time on such a scale — the 900th anniversary of the baptism of Kyivan Rus’ and honored the memory of Prince St. Volodymyr. Oddly enough, until that year The Day to honor the Rus’ enlightener — the Holy Equal to the Apostles Grand Prince Volodymyr — (July 15, according to the Julian calendar) had been marked rather modestly in the Russian Empire.

One should give the current Minister of Education and Science Ivan Vakarchuk his due. After taking up this office, where he inherited a mess not of his own making, he tackled it heroically. The mess is this year’s entrance examinations campaign, an area that is riddled with problems.

Arsen Zinchenko, a member of the 1st Convocation of the Ukrainian parliament, has launched a publishing project called Stoziria (A Hundred Stars), which is part of the Library of the Ukrainian Family. Many well-designed and illustrated books in this series have already been published. Each of them focuses on a certain historical figure. Mr. Zinchenko suggested that I write a book on James Mace. This book will soon be published. Here I would like to share some reflections with readers of The Day , the newspaper to which Mace devoted, in my opinion, the best years of his life. A US citizen, this eminent researcher of the 1932-1933 Holodomor was inseparably linked with the Ukrainian nation.

Professor Khmelko, everybody studied history in school, but for some reason, as many as 23 percent of eastern Ukrainians and 16 percent of those in the south consider present-day Russia to be the successor of Kyivan Rus’. There are many Ukrainians who find it difficult to answer this question: 16 percent nationwide, about 17 percent in central and southern Ukraine, and 26 percent in the east. Why is that?

They say that the preparations for the Euro- 2012 soccer championship are threatening the development of track and field (athletics), often called the “Queen of Sports.” Traditionally, track and field athletes have always practiced at the local stadiums, which, in addition to soccer fields, had running tracks, long-jump pits, throwing sectors, and other infrastructural elements.
