Quarterback Brian Hoyer was visibly frustrated by the outcome, including some of the mistakes that he made. He didn't shy away from responsibility for some first-half errors, including the very questionable toss he made near the end of the half that was easily intercepted.

I was looking forward to hearing Robin Eubanks and EB3 at the Detroit International Jazz Festival because it was one of the few bands on the docket with a frankly experimental profile. Eubanks is one of our most compelling trombonists, a virtuoso improviser and technician and an interesting thinker to boot. Jazz festival jam sessions have a protocol. You typically get lots of bright swingers, a blues, a Latin tune, perhaps a ballad medley and a de rigueur flag waver at the close. The opening and closing ensemble choruses of each tune tend to be messy. Dynamics span the gamut from loud to very loud. Individual moments might quicken the pulse, but the whole invariably equals less than the sum of the parts.
