Lloyd Carr was leaning out of the press box window, looking up. The former Michigan coach wanted to see the pregame flyover and wasn't sure when or where it was. He was able to see the planes and, for the first time in 28 years at Michigan Stadium, wondered who was receiving the kickoff.

His reputation is as an offensive coach, and that was Saturday's biggest disappointment. Starting quarterback Nick Sheridan didn't seem ready for the stage, and there was no running game. Rodriguez said the offense is still bland, but that's only a temporary excuse. And, as he said, he's disappointed that it was a loss.

The O-line was an issue of concern for MSU heading into this game and that concern proved valid. MSU had to rotate a redshirt freshman, Joel Foreman, in at left guard, and the Spartans are also integrating a new left tackle, Rocco Cironi, into the mix. The running game suffered as a result gaining just 81 yards.
