England 17 Barbarians 14: THE BARBARIANS are usually welcome at Twickenham but yesterday they did rather more harm than good. Rarely has such a large, expectant crowd been treated to a less fulfilling end-of-season fixture involving England, and nasty facial knocks suffered by Charlie Hodgson and Toby Flood further dissipated the feel-good factor left over from the previous day's Premiership final. The pair are still scheduled to depart for New Zealand this evening but will be in no mood for any traditional Maori nose-rubbing on their arrival.

Wasps 26 Leicester 16: WHEN HISTORIANS chart the development of professional rugby union, Saturday's events will rank among the milestones. Even as Lawrence Dallaglio bade farewell, it was impossible not to wander away through a world-record crowd for a club fixture and not feel confident the game will flourish, even in the big man's high-profile absence. Those fans who still regard Twickenham finals as parochial sideshows mostly played and watched by middle-class men with wobbly stomachs would scarcely recognise the sport these days.

"WE ARE in a good position now but the Ulster championship, you have to win three real tough games in order to win it. So, one down." Kevin McGuckin stood in the baking heat, hands on hips and happily considered Derry's situation.

Laois 0-15 Wicklow 0-13: IN VICTORY, one expects an outpouring of emotion. Relief is the natural feeling, but the Laois manager, Liam Kearns, opted for anger with an astonishing tirade directed at local media in the immediate aftermath of Saturday's narrow defeat of Wicklow and that old schemer Mick O'Dwyer.

MUNSTER SHC FIRST ROUND/WATERFORD v CLARE: THERE WAS no soft landing for Waterford in Limerick yesterday, as Clare ruthlessly ran the under-strength champions ragged to record only the county's second championship win this decade. For all the trepidation about Waterford's formidable injury list, few anticipated the meltdown that unfolded in the second half.

MIKE MAC wore a mischievous grin and the look of a man vindicated. This coup, coming out and battering the Munster champions with honest physical play and a hail of scores underlined yet again his reputation for the unexpected. As a Clareman 2000 you could tell he had enjoyed himself. This was old style.

LEINSTER SFC QUARTER-FINAL/MEATH v WEXFORD/Wexford 2-14 Meath 2-13: HEMINGWAY THRIVED on the slow death in the hot afternoon, the heavy inevitability that surrounded the matador as he worked on his kill. Well even he would have been thrown by this one.

COLM COYLE walked out of the Meath dressingroom still displaying that horrible, sinking feeling of losing a championship match he knows his team should have won. No one expected him to be calm and collected in this heat of the moment, and he didn't disappoint.
