ALONE HE stands, or rather will stand. Pádraig Harrington will be the sole Irish player in the field for next week's US Open at Torrey Pines, after his Ryder Cup team-mate Paul McGinley and tour rookie Rory McIlroy failed to come through the 36-hole international qualifying at Walton Heath outside London yesterday.

MANCHESTER CITY were last night trying to agree a compromise with Blackburn Rovers that would allow Mark Hughes to replace the sacked Sven-Goran Eriksson as manager. Hughes will not come cheap, with four members of his coaching staff expected to follow him, but that will not be a problem for a man of Thaksin Shinawatra's wealth and the City owner hopes to conclude the deal before the end of the week.

NOT THAT he would let it show, but Graham Henry and his coaching ticket are men under pressure. Next Saturday marks the All Blacks' first foray into the Test arena since the national disaster that was the World Cup quarter-final defeat eight months ago and, in a curious way, the Canterbury Crusaders seventh "Super" rugby title in nine years merely turned up the heat.

PROVINCIAL CHAIRMAN Jimmy O'Gorman has admitted disappointment with last Sunday's 17,365 attendance at the Gaelic Grounds for the Clare v Waterford Munster SHC showdown. O'Gorman expected to see 23-25,000 in Limerick for the quarter-final tie but supporters from his native Waterford did not travel in their usually high numbers as they were unhappy with the choice of venue. However, O'Gorman, although sympathising to an extent, insisted that the decision to play the game in Limerick was taken democratically.
