Cymbalta Receives European Approval For The Treatment Of Generalised Anxiety Disorder

Eli Lilly and Co (NYSE: LLY) and Boehringer Ingelheim have announced that the European Commission has approved the use of Cymbalta(R) (duloxetine) for the treatment of Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD). This approval -- the fourth for duloxetine in Europe -- was issued on 28 July following an initial positive opinion issued by the European Medicines Agency's (EMEA) Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) on 26 June 2008.

Pregnant women who endure the psychological stress of being in a war zone are more likely to give birth to a child who develops schizophrenia. Research published in the open access journal BMC Psychiatry supports a growing body of literature that attributes maternal exposure to severe stress during the early months of pregnancy to an increased susceptibility to schizophrenia in the offspring. A new clinical trial at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill using a popular low-dose contraceptive could uncover a more effective treatment for the 5 to 10 percent of women who suffer from premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). PMDD is much more severe than premenstrual syndrome, or PMS. The disorder interferes with a woman's ability to function effectively several days out of each month, every month.

Suicidal Thoughts Not Uncommon Among US Students

A recent study found that suicidal thoughts among US college students is more common than might be expected, after more than half of 26,000 students surveyed at 70 colleges and universities reported having at least one episode of suicidal thinking at some point in their lives. 15 per cent of students also reported having seriously considered attempting suicide and more than 5 per cent said they had tried to commit suicide at least once.
