Samsung m530 coming to Bell in Canadian Olympic Team livery

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, Bell Mobility, EV-DO, CDMA Hey Canadians: looking for a quick, easy, cheap (well, sort of cheap) way to show some national pride? We think we've got just the ticket, and so does Bell. Turns out they'll be launching the m530 music flip with Canadian Olympic Team branding next month for $99.95 CAD (about $99) on a three-year plan or $299.95 CAD (about $298) prepaid. You're not going to blow anyone away with the features, though -- unless your friends and family are blown away by barn-burners like 1.3 megapixel cameras, stereo Bluetooth, and somewhat unattractive external music controls.[Via Mobile In Canada]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

HTC's Touch Diamond gets spotted in Sprint attire

HTC's Touch Diamond gets spotted in Sprint attire

Time 01.07.2008 18:19 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, Sprint, Windows Mobile, EV-DO, CDMA Right, so it's not like we didn't know a CDMA version of HTC's hotly anticipated Touch Diamond was headed to Sprint, but who can honestly argue with in the wild photos proving that said assumption is true? What we have here is a bona fide Diamond in Sprint garb, although eagle-eyed readers will likely notice the mildly tweaked TouchFLO interface (which reeks of Bold there at the bottom, no?). At any rate, you can peek one more (blurry, of course) image of this bugger in the read link.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Motorola's basic W265 crosses the FCC wire

Motorola's basic W265 crosses the FCC wire

Time 01.07.2008 18:19 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Handsets, Motorola, GSM Unlike the Sony Ericsson series of the same letter, Motorola's "W" line doesn't really stand for anything special -- it's basically a catch-all for the company's low-end fare. On that note, we've got a W265 hitting the FCC here with an endless apettite for boring us to tears, though the presence of both GSM 850 and 1900 means we'll be able to bring that boredom straight to US shores if we should so choose. There's also an FM radio in there somewhere, but that's pretty much where the feature list comes to a grinding halt. Make it free, Motorola -- not on contract -- and we'll take two.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

China Mobile's talks to nab iPhone turning the corner?

China Mobile's talks to nab iPhone turning the corner?

Time 01.07.2008 16:22 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Apple, China MobileChina Unicom aside, China Mobile is apparently still very interested in bringing the iPhone to mainland China -- and thanks to the return of the traditional revenue model for the iPhone 3G, balls are once again rolling to make that happen. China Mobile called the original iPhone's model the single biggest "hurdle" to sealing a deal, and at this point, only "practical" issues remain -- probably revolving around the fact that China has no WCDMA networks to speak of, if we had to guess, which would raise question about exactly how the iPhone 3G should be marketed there. For the time being, China Mobile says there's no schedule for bringing it to market -- and we know we can't rely on Apple for much guidance there until a deal actually happens -- so we'll just have to wait and see what those execs can get knocked out behind closed doors.[Via Unwired View]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Telus getting enV2 as "KEYBO" -- seriously?

Time 01.07.2008 15:15 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Handsets, LG, Telus Mobility, EV-DO, CDMA We're hearing that Telus will be ushering in a whole new age of Texter's Thumb before too long with the launch of the curiously-named "KEYBO," a rebrand of the enV2 found on Verizon in the States. EV-DO data, a media player, and a 2 megapixel camera make this a solid choice for SMS maniacs who want something just a little sexier and fancier than the Rumour (itself a rebrand of Sprint's Rumor). We understand where the name comes from -- sort of -- but that doesn't mean it's right.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Verizon XV6900 hands-on

Verizon XV6900 hands-on

Time 01.07.2008 13:16 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Handsets, Features, HTC, Verizon Wireless, Windows Mobile, EV-DO, CDMA Anyone remotely familiar with the HTC or Sprint Touch will feel right at home with Verizon's version, the XV6900. The XV6900 isn't content to just fall in line and play "me too," though -- Big Red decided to go with a blindingly glossy white finish, bucking the soft-touch black used as a staple of the Touch line, and that could be a boon or a bust depending on who you are and how you intend to use the device. The tenets of HTC's TouchFLO interface are totally preserved from the other Touches we know and love, and thankfully, Verizon went easy with the application of bright red to the UI elements. Physically, the XV6900 is just ever-so-slightly larger than its GSM cousin -- not enough for the average person to ever notice in the course of regular use -- and the addition of 3G data is more than enough to make up for that slight difference as far as we're concerned. One thing that struck us was how much better the XV6900's display was over the original's; the overwhelming improvement in contrast is pretty striking, although to be fair, we would've never noticed had we not had them side by side. Sony Ericsson's "Remi" -- W890 style, minus the W?

Sony Ericsson's "Remi" -- W890 style, minus the W?

Time 01.07.2008 12:19 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Handsets, Sony Ericsson, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS It looks like Sony Ericsson's finally getting around to producing an ultra-thin candybar that isn't all dolled up in Walkman branding, which should be music to the ears of folks who hate music of all kinds (you know who you are). We jest -- obviously, the Walkman image isn't for everyone, and modern non-Walkman Sony Ericssons typically have plenty of prowess for busting out the tunes -- so we're actually seeing people from all walks of life being able to get into this so-called "Remi". The rumored handset looks plenty real in these shots posted over on se-nse, and the specs sound legit, too: HSDPA, a 3.2 megapixel cam, and a body measuring somwhere in the neighborhood of 10mm thick -- all attributes borrowed from its W890 cousin. Pictured next to the Remi on the right is the legendary T610, a phone that holds a very special place in the hearts of they Sony Ericsson faithful; with its aluminum shell and two-tone face, it's pretty obvious that the Remi is trying to tastefully evoke the T610's cues, so let's just hope there's some bite behind the bark when it launches.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

AT&T announces iPhone 3G pricing plans

AT&T announces iPhone 3G pricing plans

Time 01.07.2008 12:18 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Handsets, ATT, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS, Apple digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/AT_T_Announces_iPhone_3G_pricing_plans'; Finally, a piece of news we can actually do something with. AT&T today announced its pricing structure for the next iteration of Apple's iPhone -- which you can plunk down money for come 8 am, July 11th. There's not much that's surprising here -- new customers and those eligible for an upgrade will be able to nab the phone for $199 (8GB) or $299 (16GB), while "early upgraders" will have to fork over $399 or $499, all with a two year contract and $18 upgrade fee, of course. The telco says a no-commitment version of the phone will be available for $599 and $699, though it looks like that will come after the initial launch. AT&T appears to be leaning pretty heavily towards the all-in unlimited plans, but there are options if you don't want to go that route. We've sorted out the basics after the break, and included AT&T's "iReady" video -- certainly good for a few chuckles.Continue reading AT&T announces iPhone 3G pricing plansRead | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Verizon CEO hates on Steve Jobs, doesn't see iPhone as a mass-market handset

Time 01.07.2008 10:21 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Culture, Verizon Wireless, Misc, Apple If you've been scouring the dictionary for sour grapes, chances are you'll find Ivan Seidenberg's picture. Verizon Communications' chairman and chief executive recently sat down for an interview with Financial Times, and while he spent the vast majority of his time boasting of just how amazing Verizon is, he did stop to remark about Cupertino ever so briefly. Granted, he did start off by admitting that Apple was a "great company," but that didn't stop him from pillorying the iPhone as well as Dear Leader himself. He actually accused the interviewer of "declaring [Apple] a winner before it had earned it on the field," suggesting that the iPhone wouldn't become a mass-market handset simply because the next iteration will be subsidized. He also stated that "Mr. Jobs had no monopoly on innovation," and took the conversation even further off track by blurting that "Steve Jobs eventually will get old." At least Keystone knows where to find its next bitter beer face, right?[Via The Inquirer, image courtesy of Pace, thanks Frank]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sprint's Airave signal booster in the wild, on sale nationwide this month?

Time 01.07.2008 10:21 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Peripherals, Samsung, Sprint, EV-DO, CDMA Considering that the last time Sprint's Airave was even relevant was when a smattering of folks bought one in Denver and Indianapolis, like, last September, here's a quick refresher on what this thing does. Similar to T-Mobile @home, this box plugs into one's broadband connection and essentially acts as a mini cell tower within your house, which will certainly make folks in a fringe zone with no option for Roam Only (feel our pain, Instinct owners?) quite happy. For whatever reason, the carrier has dilly-dallied around with this thing forever, and even if whispers prove true and it launches on July 15th for $99 (on top of a monthly fee), we have to wonder if anyone will even bite. Two more shots in the read link.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

HP's iPAQ 900 Business Communicator gets handled on video

Time 01.07.2008 09:18 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Handsets, Windows Mobile, HP, GSM, EDGE, HSDPAAfter you delay a not-exactly-groundbreaking product like the iPAQ 900 for the umpteenth time, there should really be no surprise to find a lukewarm reaction when it actually ships. Nevertheless, loyalists out there that refuse to give up on HP's Windows Mobile 6.1-powered Business Communicator will likely love the lengthy hands-on demonstration at GottaBeMobile. There's nothing there that'll floor you or anything, but if you really needed to see someone handle this thing for 14 minutes before making your purchasing decision, head on past the break and mash that sideways triangle.[Thanks, Rob]Continue reading HP's iPAQ 900 Business Communicator gets handled on videoRead | Permalink | Email this | Comments
