Warner Music joins Nokia's Comes With Music download program

Warner Music joins Nokia's Comes With Music download program

Time 01.07.2008 04:47 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: MultimediaThe latest label following BMG to join Nokia's Comes With Music service bandwagon is none other than Warner Music Group. The third-largest label joins the powerful cadre of labels on the service, which as of this posting lacks only EMI for a full major label lineup. As a reminder, the service allows you to download music for 12 months and then keep it as long as you own the device or transfer to a PC. Now, of course, we just need to wait for the devices to roll out. [Via Yahoo News]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Touch Cruise latest HTC device to fall to Android

Touch Cruise latest HTC device to fall to Android

Time 01.07.2008 04:47 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Software, HTC, AndroidWith all these HTC models getting their brains rearranged to run Android, we're starting to wonder: just how necessary is the Dream? Don't get us wrong, we're pretty amped to see what kind of amazing hardware HTC's crafting to officially debut the consumer-ready cut of Android to the world, but there are plenty of very capable handsets already in the field -- and the Touch Diamond and Touch Pro should both be more than willing to donate their bodies in the name of science when the time comes, too. The latest model to get an Android port is the Polaris, also known as the Touch Cruise in production trim. At this point, the ports are still pretty raw and the level of functionality or spit and polish probably isn't what you're used to with the native WinMo installation, but they're getting there -- and considering that Android itself still has plenty of work remaining, it's an impressive feat and a promising sign of things to come for owners of older devices. Let us know how it goes if you're brave enough to give it a shot, y'hear?[Thanks, smith]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sprint clarifies smartphone situation: Curve, Q9c still available

Sprint clarifies smartphone situation: Curve, Q9c still available

Time 01.07.2008 04:47 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Handsets, Motorola, RIM, Sprint, Windows Mobile, EV-DO, CDMA There's been a lot of chatter the past few days that the Motorola Q9c, a Windows Mobile phone launched on Sprint to little fanfare late last year, has gone up to that great Windows Mobile 6.1 build in the sky now that it's disappeared off Sprint's online store. That'd really be something, considering that Verizon and others have just launched it in the past couple months -- but not entirely out of the question, particularly if it's a dead-slow seller or is earning more than its fair share of tech support calls. For what it's worth, though, we touched base with Sprint on the matter and were informed that it's just "out of stock for direct ship" -- that's the stuff you see on Sprint's site -- but that it should still be readily available in retail stores. On a related note, the Curve is out of stock as well, but no need to panic there, either. Sprint tells us that they're experiencing some pretty crazy demand for the thing, but that they're replenishing inventory on a daily basis and it should be back online within a few days.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]Permalink | Email this | Comments

HTC Touch Pro passes FCC in CDMA flavor

HTC Touch Pro passes FCC in CDMA flavor

Time 01.07.2008 04:47 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Handsets, HTC, Windows Mobile, EV-DO, CDMA Among the many ducks that Sprint (and Verizon?) will need to get in a row in order to launch their own version of HTC's Touch Pro, FCC certification ranks pretty freakin' high on the list. No worries, though -- it's all good, because that just happened. An HTC device with model number "RAPH800" has now popped up in the filing system, featuring CDMA with EV-DO on the 850 and 1900MHz bands. Of course, certification is certainly no indication of when a product's actually going to launch, but if (heaven forbid) the glossy QWERTY WinMo slider gets delayed, at least we can call out anyone trying to slide the "we're waiting on FCC clearance" excuse past us.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

RIM promises "strongest second half ever"

RIM promises "strongest second half ever"

Time 01.07.2008 04:47 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: RIMBrushing aside the threat of the iPhone 3G with its vastly-improved enterprise support, RIM's Jim Balsillie is saying that the second half of 2008 will be his company's "strongest second half ever," saying that there isn't a lot of overlap between the demographics targeted by the iPhone and BlackBerry line. Most of his excitement stems from the upcoming launch of the Bold, a device that easily destroys the spec sheets of every BlackBerry to come before it -- though with the Thunder in the pipe, we imagine he's reserving some celebratory high-fives for that one, too. The big words come on the heels of a somewhat lackluster first quarter call for the Canadian firm in which it announced that quarterly earnings expectations would be met, while simultaneously warning about some difficulties in the second quarter. If those "difficulties" have anything to do with people getting upset that John Mayer got his Bold before anyone else, well, we wouldn't be surprised in the least.[Via mocoNews]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Series 40 6th Edition premieres on Nokia's Supernova series

Series 40 6th Edition premieres on Nokia's Supernova series

Time 01.07.2008 04:47 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Software, NokiaIt's that magical time of the season again where Nokia's mass-market platform, Series 40, gets a little spec bump to keep up with the Joneses. The latest cut is 6th Edition (which follows 5th Edition, in case there was any doubt there) which will get its official world debut on the Supernova 7510 fashion phone in the fourth quarter of this year. What magical gifts can users expect? Most importantly, Flash Lite 3 comes in the box, which means support for video; plenty of other Series 40 phones have shipped with Flash support, but version 3 is fresh. It'll also support a significantly enhanced browser, UI transitions (think S60 3.2), and support for Windows Media Audio 10 and Windows Media Video 9, among other things. Yeah, at the end of the day it's still a dumbphone, but it looks like Nokia's doing everything it can to blur the lines. [Warning: PDF link][Via IntoMobile]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

New 3G Motorola in FCC doesn't do anything for us

New 3G Motorola in FCC doesn't do anything for us

Time 01.07.2008 04:47 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Handsets, Motorola, GSM, EDGE, UMTS This new Motorola in the FCC's filings looks like no model we're familiar with, and from what we can see, that's a very good thing. The candybar was only tested for GSM / EDGE 1900 and Bluetooth, an indication that it's destined for some non-US market -- though the manual makes mention of 3G capability and we see a front-facing cam here as well, so whatever market does get it will have access to some speedy data and video calling. We only hope this little gem is nothing more than a low-end model designed to bring WCDMA to the masses (or possibly a one-off custom designed to a carrier's exact specifications), because if it's even remotely indicative of the design direction Moto's looking to go in the post-breakup era, we can get that fork ready. You know, the one we'll use to stick in Motorola... when it's done. Ah, never mind.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

T-Mobile bumping per-text rates again

T-Mobile bumping per-text rates again

Time 01.07.2008 04:47 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Messaging, T-MobileJust a little over a year after going to 15 cents per message, T-Mobile's at it again, bumping the rate to 20 cents for those who go over their monthly allotment. For anyone with an unlimited messaging plan, it's obviously not an issue -- but many folks aren't, so this could end up stinging the pocketbook just a bit when it goes in effect come August 29. For what it's worth, T-Mob just seems to be responding to the 20 cent trend that's going on in the industry right now -- but it still hurts something fierce, and it's a pretty solid reminder that even casual texters are better off on a legit messaging plan these days.[Thanks, Ryan J. and Mike]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
