European 3G users break 100 million, 2G laughs maniacally

Time 01.07.2008 04:46 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: HSDPA, UMTS, HSUPAAs much fuss as we make about 3G, the impact it has on the mobile experience, and the death of old-school GSM as a viable technology, deployed WCDMA networks in their various forms are still just a drop in the bucket when compared to the GSM subscriber pool as a whole -- even in 3G-rich Europe. A new report from market research firm Informa Telecoms and Media reveals that European 3G users now number 101.5 million, which works out to about 11.1 percent of the some 910.8 million wireless users in the continent. Norway, Sweden, and Italy all individually broke 25 percent 3G penetration, but even so, that paints a very interesting picture of the overwhelming importance of the legacy infrastructure. With EDGE Evolution on the way, it could continue to play a majority role well into the next decade, too.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

BlackBerry Media Sync for iTunes makes all-too-brief appearance

BlackBerry Media Sync for iTunes makes all-too-brief appearance

Time 01.07.2008 04:46 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Multimedia, Software, RIM We've known for a while that support for iTunes synchronization (songs, artwork, playlists, the whole nine yards) would be coming to the BlackBerry platform, and very briefly last week, RIM unleashed that capability on the world. It's unclear why the software was pulled -- maybe it just wanted to release the software to more fanfare, maybe it was buggier than a standing pool of swamp water -- but either way, BlackBerry users desperate to get their sync on should still be able to nab the goods from a number of mirrors hosted by vigilant (and quick-thinking) users around the world while we wait for RIM to decide when to introduce it again.[Via Gear Diary]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

France Telecom ups TeliaSonera bid, heated talks ongoing

Time 01.07.2008 04:46 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Orange Following a rather unceremonious rejection of a $41 billion offer earlier in the month, rumors are swirling that France Telecom is adding some extra cash onto its bid for TeliaSonera, a juggernaut carrier and ISP serving Nordic and Baltic countries. France Telecom's flagship brand is Orange, and if some sort of deal does go through, it could theoretically lead to Orange becoming one of the dominant carriers in the world with control over a huge swath of European spectrum. The talks, which are apparently still underway, are said to be extremely fragile -- they could end in tears of joy or sadness at any moment -- and France Telecom would like to get a deal done by Monday or Tuesday at the latest. More on this one as it develops.Update: The bid is dead -- again. Something tells us this isn't the last time we're going to hear about this.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

MetroPCS MetroFlash welcomes Verizon, Sprint customers -- and their devices

MetroPCS MetroFlash welcomes Verizon, Sprint customers -- and their devices

Time 01.07.2008 04:46 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Handsets, CDMAMetroPCS may not have the largest wireless footprint in the States, but they did take a jab at the larger two CDMA carriers by announcing their intention to take on any Verizon and Sprint customers ready to jump ship -- as well as any "compatible" devices they may want to bring along with them. Sprint already supposedly does this (although we've still yet to hear of it actually really happening), but the specifics of MetroPCS's MetroFlash seem equally unclear. It doesn't sound like they'll reprogram just any CDMA device that walks through their doors, though, just the ones they've had a chance to test on their network. Definitely kills the buzz (and the number of devices that can be ported), but a little open is still kind of better than totally closed, right?[Via Seattle P-I and Mobility Site]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

NEC's "Bubble Talk" delivers micro-voicemails

Time 01.07.2008 04:46 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Messaging, NEC Between this, voice-to-text, and text-to-voice systems, the lines between talking and texting are getting very blurred indeed. NEC used the NXTcomm show in Las Vegas to show off its "Bubble Text" technology, which is really nothing more than voice SMS -- record a quick snippet of talking, send it off, and the recipient gets a note in his or her inbox with your sonorous speech attached to it. At a high level, it's no different than attaching a sound clip to an MMS, but NEC appears to have streamlined the software to the point where setting up and sending the message is no more difficult than sending a traditional text -- and depending on your circumstances, it can actually be quite a bit easier since there's no actual texting involved. NEC claims that seven carriers have already deployed Bubble Talk, and it's in talks (bubble talks?) with several others. Follow the break for a video of Bubble Talk in action.[Via Unwired View]Continue reading NEC's "Bubble Talk" delivers micro-voicemailsRead | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Telcel's iPhone pricing in Mexico: not bad

Telcel's iPhone pricing in Mexico: not bad

Time 01.07.2008 04:46 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Apple The strategies carriers around the world are employing to price the iPhone 3G and its plans seem to be varying pretty wildly -- a side-effect of the newfound freedom Apple is giving them with the new model -- but in Mexico, where Telcel's signed up to release it, the strategy isn't too terribly different from AT&T's. Plans will run between MXN $399.60 and $876.90 (also available in US Dollar denominations of $41 to $90.85 after tax), and the phones will be priced on a graduated scale accordingly. The 8GB goes from MXN $3,199 down to free, while the 16GB will hit your wallet for anywhere between MXN $4,459 and $1,259. In US greenbacks, that works out to $311, free (because free's free in any currency, after all), $433, and $122, respectively. So yes, at the cheapest plan price, both models cost over $100 more than their US equivalents, but the plan's only $41 at that level, which nets you 200 voice minutes, 100 messages, and 100MB of data. Extra texts are 74 centavos (about 8 cents) and extra data -- a very real necessity -- runs 5 centavos per KB, which is a pretty immeasurably small amount of cash until you do the math and realize that you're going to be shelling out about USD $4.86 per megabyte. Be careful there![Via Engadget Spanish]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sony Ericsson, Maria Sharapova release accessory line

Sony Ericsson, Maria Sharapova release accessory line

Time 01.07.2008 04:46 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Sony Ericsson, Accessories Like a dagger through Motorola's heart, we're sure, Sony Ericsson's collaboration with tennis superstar Maria Sharapova is starting to pay dividends with the Maria Sharapova Design Collection of custom phone accessories. Launching in the third quarter, wares include the "Courtside Case," Excercise Case, Travel Wallet, and "Party Bag" -- at least three of which we weren't aware we needed -- but the custom branding should push at least a few of these out the door. One word of caution, though: Miss Sharapova assures us in the press materials that "I am looking forward to using the collection with my Sony Ericsson T303," and if her phone of choice is seriously an EDGE-less slider with a 160 x 128 display, we're forced to cast her good taste into serious doubt.[Via Engadget Spanish]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Messaging, Software, Symbian, Windows Mobile, OS X Fiddlesticks, did you just leave your precious iPhone in the bathroom of that gas station back there? Why yes, we're pretty sure you did! If you're looking to verify that with a little more certainty, though, Navizon has just the answer. The company -- already no stranger to positioning apps for the iPhone -- has released its "Mobfindr" feature which allows you to text a key phrase to your beloved companion and have it reply with its current location. Great for finding a lost or recently-stolen phone, tracking children, or perhaps for tracking man's best friend should you decide to strap an iPhone to him in lieu of a Garmin DC 30. The feature's currently available exclusively for the iPhone, but Navizon expects BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and S60 versions in the near future. Follow the break for a look at Mobfindr getting its track on.Continue reading Navizon's Mobfindr gets your phone to text homeRead | Permalink | Email this | Comments
