Willcom's full Summer '08 lineup

Willcom's full Summer '08 lineup

Time 07.07.2008 22:17 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Handsets, Others, Sharp, Windows Mobile, Willcom In addition to the 03, Willcom has unveiled a pair of other handsets for release this summer on its Japanese PHS airwaves. The 03's a hard one to top -- pretty much any smartphone, a morphing keypad, and a WVGA display is going to make things tough on the competition -- but Sharp has a second entry in the trio with the D4. Like the 03, the D4 packs Windows Mobile and a full QWERTY board, but unlike the 03, the D4 flips up all Kaiser-style, which should be just perfect for showing off the WSVGA (yes, wide super VGA) display. On the simpler end of the spectrum, the Willcom 9 is a chunky, blocky flip with a QVGA display, 1.3 megapixel camera, and NetFront brower that'll be available in black or white. Kind of anticlimactic when you put it up against those other two, but not everyone wants a smartphone. No, not even in Japan.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Such is possibly the case in the latest batch of leaked pictures doing the rounds on the old information superhighway. Lately (i.e. today) shots of RIM's new touchscreen phone -- the Thunder -- have surfaced showing off what's supposed to be a new version of the BlackBerry OS (4.7) running its media player. Now we're not saying these pics aren't really real, but what we are saying is that these shots look an awful lot like renders to us, and since no one can verify them beyond an "anonymous source," we're just going to recommend a healthy dose of you-know-what, okay?[Via MobileSyrup]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Culture, Messaging, Studies While there has been quite the kerfuffle about banning texting while driving and educating Australian youngsters on text speak, a new survey shows that the vast majority of us haven't even sent a single SMS. Research firm Ipsos MediaCT polled individuals in a variety of countries and came to one general conclusion: If folks are using SMS, "they're using it frequently." On the flip-side, those who aren't savvy with text messaging aren't apt to just dabble in it. For instance, 82% of respondents in America said "that they never used text messaging, while 3% said that they used it monthly or less" and 15% reported using it "every week or even more. Who knows what that figure would be if carriers stopping charging an arm and a leg for per-use messaging.[Via Textually, image courtesy of ugo]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Samsung B2700 sports water resistance, new naming scheme

Samsung B2700 sports water resistance, new naming scheme

Time 07.07.2008 17:14 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, GSM So IDNES appears to have revealed a reasonably serviceable new rugged candybar from Samsung for the European market featuring an integrated compass and barometer / altimeter, FM radio, Bluetooth, a 220 x 176 display, and IP54 certification, which promises resistance to dust and the occasional splash of H2O. That's all well and good, but the real story here might be the phone's full model number -- GT-B2700 -- which appears to signal a move away from Samsung's longstanding SGH / SCH / SPH naming convention that has its roots in the early days of Samsung's mobile business. Is it just us, or is anyone else getting just a little emotional about the thought of the stalwart "SGH" prefix going away? The memories, Samsung, the memories! Anyway, back to the B2700, IDNES expects to find it on local shelves later in the summer for about 5,000 Czech crowns (roughly $336).[Via Unwired View]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

NTT DoCoMo launching BlackBerry Internet Service

NTT DoCoMo launching BlackBerry Internet Service

Time 07.07.2008 15:22 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Handsets, RIM, NTT DoCoMo, GSM, UMTS A full 25 months after we first heard that NTT DoCoMo was bringing BlackBerry to Japan, the carrier is just now getting around to announcing the launch of BlackBerry Internet Service. Of note, the provider still expects you folks over there to use that trusty (and rusty) 8707h to keep tabs with your corporate email, but at least you'll have bona fide BIS! Anywho, the service will run users ¥3,045 ($29) per month on top of the standard FOMA charges, and in case you're hungry for more, a BlackBerry Data Transmission Package will see the light in September and enable subscribers to "transmit up to 80,000 packets of data per month for a flat charge of ¥1,680 ($16). For those curious, extra data beyond that will run your bill up at the rate of ¥0.0525 ($.00049) per packet.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS Samsung's UK outpost has sounded the alarm that the all-business i200 candybar imbued with Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard Edition is now available at retail. Though not ugly, Sammy certainly didn't put much effort into making this one beautiful -- hence our "all-business" tag -- and the 3.6Mbps HSDPA 2100 should go a long way toward putting it in the breast pockets of a few three-piece suits out there. Interested parties should expect to shell out about €399 ($626) when they go seeking it out.[Via the::unwired]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Motorola's ZN5 gets handled, camera shows promise

Motorola's ZN5 gets handled, camera shows promise

Time 07.07.2008 13:19 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Handsets, Motorola, GSM, EDGE The best cameraphone ever made? That's Motorola's boastful claim about the new ZN5, but Crave UK's quick initial impression of it suggests that it might not be a baseless, ridiculous claim after all -- not totally, anyway. The cam apparently fires up lickety-split after popping the lens cover into its open position, and the xenon flash seems to outperform anything with an LED (no surprise there). The lack of 3G is a bummer, but at least you've got WiFi there to upload your crisp, clean photographic work. Crave also sends a shout out to Moto for including a 3.5mm headphone jack, and also for delivering a design that clearly contains absolutely no roots in the RAZR. We'll second that motion -- and if Moto can either deliver this mega-cheaply when it launches in September or pop out a second version with 3G at a slightly loftier price point, we're thinking this could end up being one of the most highly-praised products to come out of Schaumburg in a long, long time.[Thanks, T.I.]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
