Vertu kicks off Ascent Ti variants with Checked and Knurled editions

Time 09.07.2008 20:15 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Handsets, Vertu, GSM, EDGE, UMTS Even very recently, Vertu's had no problem milking its older models endlessly with ultra-limited-run special editions -- a shame, really, considering that they've had the 3G-capable Ascent Ti in the stable since last year. If you're going to spend thousands (sometimes, tens or hundreds of thousands) of dollars on a ridiculously over-the-top handset, it may as well at least ride the UMTS wave, yeah? Finally, the wealthy have an opportunity to have their cake and eat it too thanks to the Nokia division's new Checked and Knurled versions of the Ascent Ti, which as you might guess, are checked and knurled, respectively. It might be more than a gimmick, too, since they're probably easier to keep a grip on than the standard model -- so whip out those checkbooks, clumsy rich people.[Via Crave]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Keepin' it real fake, part CXXIV: SongLiveX1 gets out ahead of actual X1

Filed under: Handsets, Others Can't wait to get your hands on Sony Ericsson's hotly anticipated XPERIA X1? Then perhaps this so-called SongLiveX1 will suffice -- or, not. If for some reason you do decide to take the plunge, however, you can apparently expect a 3-inch 240 x 320 display (not a touchscreen), dual cameras (one of which is supposedly 5 megapixels), Bluetooth, all the usual media-playing functions and, oh yes, an NES emulator. All that can be yours for the bargain price of €82 to €98 (or $128 to $154), depending on the quantity purchased.[Thanks, Rashy AA] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nokia gets fancy for CDMA with 3608, 8208

Nokia gets fancy for CDMA with 3608, 8208

Time 09.07.2008 17:16 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, EV-DO, CDMA Who would've thought that Nokia's first Series 40 dual slider would be for CDMA networks? Well, not so fast -- these two aren't exactly Series 40, it seems. Nokia hasn't announced either the 3608 flip or 8208 dual slider officially, but official specs and pictures have popped up on an Espoo-owned domain that reveal the China-bound handsets to operate on CDMA 800 / 1900, and in the case of the 8208, we can say with certainty that there's EV-DO Rev. A on board. Anyway, as we were saying, Nokia lists both as having "Series 40 Nokia like UIs," with "like" being the key word there; we suspect these are either still being manufactured for Nokia by a third party, Series 40 can't rock CDMA in its current incarnation, or a little bit of both. Trust us, though, Nokia -- that doesn't mean you shouldn't take these cute little guys global.[Via MobileBurn, here and here]Read - Nokia 3608Read - Nokia 8208Permalink | Email this | Comments

Lamborghini-branded ASUS ZX1 said to be canceled

Time 09.07.2008 15:15 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Handsets, ASUS It's been touted and shown off for a few months now, but it looks like ASUS may have finally given up on its luxurious Lamborghini-branded ZX1 smartphone, at least if Alex of MoDaCo is to be believed. According to him, ASUS has cancelled the planned summer launch of the device in order to ensure that "more important devices" scheduled for Q4 of this year are released on time. No word if that means we may still eventually see the pricey phone released sooner or later, but we wouldn't recommend holding your breath at the moment. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Palm Centro, now in "electric blue" for AT&T

Time 09.07.2008 15:15 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Handsets, Palm, Palm OS, GSM, EDGE Sorry, we'd make a comment on the appearance of AT&T's newest Centro shade, but we're still blinded from that white with green buttons stunt they pulled at launch. Sounds like Palm expects this pleasantly bright blue version to be available starting Friday in AT&T retail locations -- and they're also promising some news on a price cut in time for the school year. Stay tuned.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rogers caves on iPhone 3G plans, offers up 6GB for $30 a month

Time 09.07.2008 11:18 Source  engadgetmobile.com

Filed under: Handsets, Rogers Wireless, Apple Those kind, gentle Canadians have been oh-so-politely demanding a few heads on sticks ever since Rogers' super-spendy iPhone 3G price plans were announced. Well, apparently their cries have been heard, and now Rogers is launching a promotional offer along with the iPhone of 6GB of data for $30 a month -- not quite unlimited data, but close enough -- which can be added on top of any regular voice plan. The promo will be available for iPhone buyers who activate with a three year contract before August 31. Also, perhaps in a bid to dispel some nasty rumors about a major iPhone shortage, Rogers will be hosting 8AM launch day events at six Rogers Plus stores in major Canadian cities, complete with a free breakfast. Mmm, breakfast.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
