Mammals may have two decision-making systems in their brains which operate at different speeds. One system, common to all vertebrates, operates very quickly. The more recently developed system, in the cortex, can allow information to be gathered until an accurate decision is reached. By building mathematical models of the brain and using parameter values from human studies, we identify when one or other system should be more useful and why the older system has been retained.
