Korean battery maker LG Chem and its U.S. subsidiary Compact Power are expected to announce today plans to make battery cells for electric vehicles, including the Chevrolet Volt, in Holland, Mich., two people familiar with the plans said Thursday. The plant is expected to create 400 jobs and 15 million to 20 million battery cells a year, the Free Press has reported.

The number of problem banks in Michigan held steady at the end of 2009, according to data released Thursday by the bank ratings firm BauerFinancial. Of the 141 Michigan-based banks examined by BauerFinancial, 30, or about 20%, were rated problematic or worse. Of this number, half received BauerFinancial's lowest rating.
