Whirlpool Corp., the world's largest appliance maker, will close plants in Oxford, Miss., and Puebla, Mexico, and cut 985 jobs. Production of ovens and washers will shift to sites in Cleveland, Tenn., and Celaya, Mexico, the Benton Harbor-based company said Thursday in a statement.

Fiat SpA has figured out how to beat the slump in U.S. auto sales caused by a slowing economy and record gasoline prices: sell a $115,000 sports car that gets 12 miles a gallon. Sales of Fiat's Quattroporte and other Maseratis jumped 20% in the United States last month and are up 16% for the year to 1,353 vehicles, according to Autodata Corp. in Woodcliff Lake, N.J.
