Until recently, visitors to St. Sophia Cathedral saw that in the central part of the cathedral where the iconostas is, below the Oranta (Mother of God), there were no Royal Gates, as required by church canon to symbolize the unity of the heavenly and the earthly. During the last century Soviet functionaries cut them into pieces for further melting. They may even have stolen parts of the gates, since this masterpiece of ecclesiastical art contained over 100 kg of gilded silver.

Emmerich Kalmans The Violet of Montmartre (Das Veilchen vom Montmartre) stands out from the rest of his works. The dialogue of this piece of light opera is somewhat dull and the operetta was not exactly popular with audiences, although music critics called it the operetta version of Giacomo Puccinis opera La Boheme . Kalman, a Hungarian composer, once admitted, I know that half a page of a Liszt score will overshadow all my operettas.

During his lifetime he was known as a great healer, a brilliant surgeon, and the author of a number of outstanding discoveries that marked the beginning of a new era in medical science. Mykola Pyrohovs innovative works on pedagogy, particularly his indefatigable efforts to reform the education system in the Russian Empire in the mid-19th century, won him wide acclaim but also served to expanded the ranks of his vicious enemies- those who envied him, as well as the intriguers and soft-headed reactionaries who, above all, despised freedom of thought.

ZHYTOMYR OBLAST Samples of unique decorative pieces of porcelain of the Polissian school may soon be lost to posterity. Some porcelain factories in Zhytomyr region were no longer operating even before their privatization, and no one showed much interest in the precious collections of chinaware, figurines, and decorative and household items that had been amassed over the decades. Plans were even afoot to sell them off.

For the first time in the history of The Days Library Series a book has won a prize for its design rather than its content. Klara Gudzyks Apocrypha consists of seven chapters: Ecclesiastical Affairs at the Turning Point, Social Mosaic, A Flashback to Historical Moments, A Few Portrait Studies, The Wind of Travels Far and Near, Seasons of the Year, and Fables of The Day. They reflect the spiritual simplicity and refinement of Ms. Gudzyk, who does creative work because she lives.

Ukraine has reaped the first million tons of the new harvest grain. Although the harvesting campaign has just begun, Minister of Agrarian Policies Yurii Melnyk is already reporting: We are gathering 32 centners per hectare and expect a harvest of almost 40 million tons. My grandmother, who was a professor of organic chemistry, used to say that a student must outdo his teacher so that the latter can have somebody to learn from. This philosophy requires teachers, as bearers of certain knowledge who have duly studied and reconsidered an array of source texts, to be responsible for the quality of education in an emergent nation. They should be aware of this goal: not only to ensure the successful learning of information but also to encourage their students to make a qualitative breakthrough in their studies.

The truism that genuine patriotism is not bound by geography alone has been confirmed by the steps taken by Ukrainians in the Diaspora who, as fate decreed, left their fatherland during the terrible years of war and repression. In their adopted homelands they dreamed of a free and independent Ukraine with its own language and clear-cut national idea.

President Viktor Yushchenko has undertaken the extremely complicated task of trying to obtain international recognition for the Holodomor of 1932-33 as an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people and immortalizing the memory of its victims. During the presidency of his predecessor Leonid Kuchma, the Holodomor was quietly broached once a year. These days President Yushchenko talks about it on an almost daily basis.
