The Goa Government will formally present a report to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today, seeking his nod for a green-field international airport at Mopa in North Goa. This would be the second airport in the tourist state which is already equipped with an international airport at Dabolim. A special committee set up by the Union Government to study the airport controversy in Goa on May 31, had earlier given a green signal for the proposed new international airport. The proposal had been put on hold for over a year, after the erstwhile Congress-led state government faced opposition for a second airport when South Goa-based Dabolim international airport could be continued for civilian use with major expansion. The former South Goa MP Churchill Alemao had virtually compelled the Congress'' central leadership to study the viability of two international airports for the tiny tourist state. (ANI)

The Goa Government will formally present a report tomorrow to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh seeking his nod for a greenfield international airport at Mopa in North Goa. Chief Minister Digamber Kamat said this in Panaji on Sunday. This would be the second airport in the tourist state, which is already equipped with an international airport at Dabolim. The international airport at Mopa ran into controversy after a certain section of politicians including the then MP Churchill Alemao opposed the project. In his extensive campaign, Alemao alleged that Mopa project, tucked on Goa-Maharashtra border, would be more beneficial to the neighbouring state than Goa. Worries were raised that the Mopa airport will force closure of existing Dabolim airport, which will adversely affect the tourism industry in South Goa. (ANI)

Fresh protests erupted in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday on ''Martyrs'' day'' as protesters tried to prevent leaders of the state''s National Conference party from paying homage to the martyrs. Protesters attacked the activists of National Conference gathered at the Martyrs graveyard to pay their tribute to Kashmiri prisoners who were executed in 1931 by the forces of then ruler Hari Singh to suppress an uprising. The situation turned violent when a group of protesters tried to attack party president, Omar Abdullah and police tried to quell the mob. Abdullah was immediately rushed away from the spot as police fired warning shots at the irate crowd. Policemen accompanied the cavalcades of Abdullah and other senior party members to protect the leaders from the stone pelting protesters. The protesters shouted slogans against National Conference and pelted stones at the party activists in an attempt to prevent them from paying tributes at the graveyard. Police had to resort to baton charge to control the situation. According to reports, dozens of people were injured in the protest. (ANI)
