Although rare, children do serve as living solid-organ donors, and these donations raise serious ethical issues. In the clinical report, "Minors as Living Solid-Organ Donors," the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) examines the exceptional circumstances under which minors younger than 18 can morally serve as living organ donors. Four of these criteria are suggested by the U.S. Live Organ Donor Consensus group and have the agreement of the AAP.

Researchers have developed a ground-breaking procedure that could avoid the need for transplant patients to spend the rest of their lives taking a cocktail of drugs to stop their system from rejecting their new organ, according to a series of papers in the August issue of Transplant International. Seven years after Joaquin Lucio's kidneys shut down, he had a heart attack and was taken to a Los Angeles area hospital where doctors performed an angioplasty to clear his coronary arteries. Julieanne Carter of Lynchburg, VA has a special place in her heart for the University of Virginia Health System and its Transplant Services team. In fact, she has spent so much time at UVA during the past four years that she views her caregivers as extended family. A 54-year-old German farmer who had lost both arms in an accident was given a double full-arm transplant at the Munich Clinic, Germany. A hospital spokesperson said the donor was a teenager who had died before undergoing surgery. The farmer had lived six years without arms. He had consulted the medical team at Munich University's Rechts der Isar Clinic after failing to successfully use artificial arms (prostheses).
